What is a gas giant?
Asked on: Sep 12, 2023 01:16 PMA gas giant, my little friend, is a type of planet that is really, really big and mostly made up of gases like hydrogen and helium. Imagine a balloon - it's kind of like that but in space and much bigger! The most famous gas giants we know are Jupiter and Saturn in our own solar system. They're called 'giants' because they're much larger than our Earth.
Gas giants also have many moons. You know how we have one moon that we can see at night? Well, Jupiter, for example, has 79 known moons! That would be a lot of moon cakes if we celebrated each one!
But remember, you can't stand on a gas giant like you can on Earth because it's mostly gas. If you tried to stand on one, you'd sink right through until you reached its core! And it would be a very long fall because they are so big. So let's stick to standing on Earth for now.
And lastly, even though they're called 'gas' giants, they aren't the kind of gas that makes noise when it comes out of your body! So don't worry about them making any funny noises in space!
