Apartheid is a term that originated from South Africa, and it's not a fun party game or a new dance move. It's actually a pretty serious topic. Apartheid, which in the Afrikaans language means "apartness" or "separateness," was a system of institutionalized racial segregation that existed in South Africa and South West Africa (now Namibia) from 1948 until the early 1990s.
During apartheid, the government divided people into racial groups - black, white, coloured (mixed race), and Asian - and kept them separate as much as possible. Imagine going to school and finding out you can't sit next to your best friend just because they have different skin color. That's how strict it was! The laws determined where you could live, who you could marry, the jobs you could do, and even where you could walk.
The white minority government implemented these policies to maintain political and economic control over the country. It was like being at a concert where only one person gets to decide all the songs; not much fun for everyone else! Despite facing significant opposition both domestically and internationally, it took several decades before apartheid was finally dismantled.
In 1994, Nelson Mandela became the first black president of South Africa in a fully representative democratic election. This was like hitting the jackpot after years of playing an unfair game. Since then, South Africa has been working hard to overcome the social and economic disparities that were caused by apartheid.
