What is the grand canyon?
Asked on: Sep 13, 2023 04:57 PMWell, kiddo, the Grand Canyon is like a super-duper big hole in the ground! But it's not just any hole, it's a very special one. It's located in the United States, in a state called Arizona. Imagine digging in your sandbox but a gazillion times bigger!
The Grand Canyon was carved by the Colorado River over millions of years. Imagine if you had a little stream running through your sandbox and it slowly washed away the sand over time. That's kind of how the Grand Canyon was formed, but instead of sand, it was rock that got washed away!
It's really, really big - about 277 miles long (that's longer than 2 million toy cars lined up bumper to bumper!), up to 18 miles wide (that would take forever to run across), and over a mile deep (more than 10 skyscrapers stacked on top of each other!).
People from all around the world come to see this natural wonder because it's so beautiful and unique. And guess what? The walls of the canyon tell stories about Earth's history! Just like how your drawings tell stories about your day at school.
